Golf coaching and learning to play golf has followed a particular formula since time began. You learn to swing it and move the golf ball then you go play. There is merit to that because the golf swing is a difficult bunch of motor patterns that are different to other sports.

However, just like the data gathering tools like launch monitors and body track machines the knowledge of the mind-body connection is coming on leaps and bounds.

Dr Gabrielle Wulf started me thinking about whether there was a better way to gain skills. Dr Wulf came up with a study where new golfers were split in to two groups. One group had a swing focus and the other had a target focus. The results were heavily in favour of the group who focused on the target.

So, does that mean the data and monitors and spreadsheets are redundant?

No, the data is absolutely necessary especially at the highest level. The data helps us as golf pros have a deep knowledge into what we’re passing on.

I’m sure though, there are better ways to acquire skills than rote learning on a range. Listening to Dr Rob Gray who works with baseball players and golfers alike has vast knowledge into acquiring skills via effective practice and coaching. Without rewriting the script here is a podcast with Adam Young and John Sherman.

I sit on the target focused side of the fence. I’ve always strayed away from technical stuff. I understand it but think it can be too complicated for a side hill hanger with a 7 iron into the wind. Our body and mind are remarkable tools and can do things that are incredible just by giving us a constraint.

Worth thinking about.
