I was at the coffee shop the other morning, waiting in line behind someone who seemed to have a never-ending list of requests. The poor man behind the counter was trying his best to keep up, juggling refunds, Wi-Fi passwords, milk preferences, and more. All the while, a line of increasingly impatient customers grew behind me. The fancy till—or point-of-sale system, as they probably call it—was programmed and reprogrammed until the man behind the counter became visibly flustered. I written this very thing before – my apologies for the duplicate.
It got me thinking: Why does it have to be this complicated to order a coffee? And then it hit me—golf can be just like this.
In golf, we have gadgets galore: launch monitors, golf watches, rangefinders, sensors for grips, sensors for the ground, and even sensors for your wrist. All fantastic tools, of course, but I can’t help but wonder if we’ve made the game harder than it needs to be. All this data, all these tools, all this complexity… for what? To swing a club and hit a ball toward a target.
Beginner golfers, in particular, can get lost in this maze of technology and information. Instead of learning to trust their instincts and develop a natural feel for the game, they get bogged down by spin rates and launch angles. It’s no wonder so many new golfers walk away frustrated.
My advice? Simplify. Start with the basics: grip, stance, and swinging the club toward your target. Leave the gadgets at home for now. There’s a time and place for technology, but it shouldn’t be the foundation of your learning. Golf is a beautiful game that thrives on simplicity—don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.
