Well…That Ryder Cup delivered much in terms of jingoistic spirit and drama.

We saw a European team fly out of the gate and skunk the USA in the first session and keep it going until the end. To the USA’s credit they battled back but couldn’t erase the first day deficit.

Joe LaCava and Rory McIlroy got into a slanging match which the golf media lives for. Personally, I think that happens in sports at times and the parties involved will be over it already. The golf media, of course, will lap it up for weeks.

The Ryder Cup seems to produce some of the best golf you’ll ever see. Miraculous shots from impossible situations come to pass all over the course. Pressure can also take down the best. We saw both on Saturday.

I get the feeling the USA was not quite as ready for the tournament as Europe was. There will be speculation as to why and whether there were fractures blah blah. I can almost guarantee that in two years at Bethpage the USA Team will be firing.

On a separate note, I had the pleasure of coaching one of the club teams at Hawkes Bay Golf Club yesterday. Great fun and a great bunch of guys.
