Golf Buzz Words – Match-Ups

There are so many ways to describe a swing move or categorise a golf swing. We are all familiar with golf parlance like slice, hook, fat, thin, over-the-top and stuck. One of the more recent ones I have discovered, is “match-ups”. What, in all that is good, is a fucking match-up? Simply put, a match-up…

There are so many ways to describe a swing move or categorise a golf swing. We are all familiar with golf parlance like slice, hook, fat, thin, over-the-top and stuck. One of the more recent ones I have discovered, is “match-ups”.

What, in all that is good, is a fucking match-up?

Simply put, a match-up are the moves in your swing that compliment each other to make the ball go where you want it to.

For example…..

Old Dustin here has a bowed left wrist and a closed clubface here at the end of his backswing. If he came down into the ball without rotating his body hard to the left the ball would go sideways. So, Dustin’s match-up here, is to rotate the body through impact keeping the wrist structure much the same as pictured above…

You can see his body is out of the way and the left wrist remains bowed. This is one of Dustin’s match-ups.

Let’s take a player like Mac O’Grady. Mac has researched and documented and confused more people than anyone in golf. But his match-ups were to make the backswing match the downswing and the downswing mirror the follow through. He did it so effectively he played on tour right-handed and to a scratch left-handed.

You can see in photo three in the backswing is almost identical to photo five in the downswing.

Another example of a match-up might be to have the palms opposing each other on the handle. That may seem fairly rudimentary but necessary whether it’s a strong grip or neutral. I don’t often advocate a weak grip.

The point is, everyone will have idiosyncrasies in their swings and we as coaches should help you get matched-up so that the golf ball does what you want it to do. Think Freddie Couples who lifts his arms up steeply in the backswing with late shoulder turn then dumps the club behind him and whips the fucker through impact. If he came down to the ball the same way he went up, the ball would go all over the shop. Freddie is matched up almost in a Newtonian fashion, perfectly for him.
