What’s the fastest way to get better? How do I get that little white ball in the air? How do I do that consistently? What is consistency?

The truth is, there are no quick fixes and the more time you can do your repetitions the better you’ll get – all things being equal.

Let’s define what consistency is in terms of golf. I think when people want consistency in theirs games it means to have a predictable ball flight. Ego, of course, plays a part and the straight to draw ball flight is desired. My definition of consistency is hitting the ball through the same hole in the sky at the same distance each time depending on the club. So, a 7 iron might go 135 metres and reach an apex of 33 metres. If that’s the case I want that to happen every time. That’s consistency.

What are some things you can do to make it happen?

  1. Set up your practice area for success. Lay down some alignment rods or old club for direction an another perpendicular to that for ball position. Don’t guess. If you are looking to do the same thing every time, make the set up the same every time.
  2. Use clean range balls. Range balls can be new or absolute shitters. Choose the newer ones for your practice session. Oh, and make sure they’re clean!
  3. Routine. Go through your full routine on every shot. You don’t have to take four hours to hit a shot, just go through the routine and execute. You’ll be less stressed on the course when it comes to hitting your shot if you’ve already done it a few hundred times.
  4. Evaluate after a few. After every 5 balls or so evaluate where you’re at. What height is it going? What shape has it got? How far is it going? What are my conditions? Your brain has a remarkable capacity for taking all that in and you can adjust accordingly.
  5. Swing it smooth. No bicep busting swings that pop blood vessels in your eyes. Just regular old smooth swings. The more you do it the more it becomes your swing. In golf smooth = good.

Maximising your practice time is so necessary for us busy people. These 5 simple tips will add some consistency to your practice sessions and to your game. Machine gunning a bucket of spuds is largely useless. Use the time you have to get all you can out of your game.
