Yesterday we witnessed Brian Harman win at The Open by plenty. He waggled his way round without blinking and in true fighting American spirit, said,”fuck you!” To the hecklers.

What stood out most about this year’s edition was the ribbing the players were getting from the gallery. Rickie Fowler was called a coward and other equally colourful names in camera by some numpty whinging about a football team. Harman himself was the target of some idiotic comments which turned out to be motivating.

What should have stood out was the golf. I hope this isn’t a trend that has stretched across the Atlantic. The Open has been a bastion of good golf behaviour in the past why change now? Worrying.

I noticed the media, too, hammering Harman for his waggles as if it were crime against humanity. The media have short memories it seems. Nicklaus stood over the ball waggling and wiggling for an eternity. Perhaps the media couldn’t market a quiet country boy quite like the Koepkas and McIroys so had to TRY and chop him down.

Despite all that, the wee lefty won The Open going away and should be very pleased with himself. As should we. Magnificent golf.
