What do you perceive when you’re playing golf? The grass, the ball, the clubs, what you can and can’t do…

You probably also perceive how a shot needs to be played. Like the picture above, the characters are looking at the same object but have a different perspective as to what it is. This could be a fader and a hooker of the ball looking at the same tee shot. The reality is what it is…say it’s a par 3 of 140 metres. The ball has to go 140 metres from the tee box to the hole. There is a tee box and a green and weather conditions. How we play that shot and how we get ready to play that shot are almost always different. A fader might set up on the right side of the tee box with a target slightly left of the flag. A hooker might do the opposite. In my case, I tend to pull-draw the ball so I would set up on the left with my target being on the right side of the green and let shit happen.

The point is, we all have a set of parameters to play by but how we play them is up to you and your perception.

This brings us to the perception of what you can and can’t do. I think this is why we struggle, as golfers, to take the good work we do on the range to the course. We perceive things differently. The range is just a place to slap a few spuds down there somewhere while working on technique. The course is where score matters. Two noticeably different concepts. Why not treat the range like you do the course? Perceive a shot and execute that shot to the best of your ability – every time. You may not hit as many balls in practice but you will increase the value of your practice.
