Since golf has been played, golfers have tried to figure out the swing. Some golfers have figured out THEIR swing. Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Jack, Tom Watson, Trevino, Woods etc
What we can tell by watching guys who figured out their swings is they all had control of the ball. They all did similar things in their swings to get the ball to hum. The all used the physics of collision between clubhead and ball to create a particular ball flight. What’s changed?
Not much. However, we know a little more about why these results happen. We have far more sophisticated tools now than even 20 years ago. We have launch monitors and wrist motion things and body tracks. But, what’s changed?
Nothing. We want the ball in the hole in less shots. How you hit the ball is just the same as was 100 years ago. Yes, styles come and go, but the clubhead/face still tell the ball what to do. The golfer still tells the club what to do. And, the stupid golf ball still doesn’t listen.
So, us coaches aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel we just want you to play better. The tools at our disposal help you do that but they don’t do it for you.
Here are some keys to hitting the ball a little better:
- Get control of your club’s face
- Get control of the low-point in your swing
- Figure out a “baseline” swing. From here you can alter minor things to create certain ball flights
- Always swing in balance.
- Read Harvey Penick’s “Little Red Book”
- Read “Extraordinary Golf” by Fred Shoemaker
- Get coached to establish your baseline swing.
