Every golfer has it. If they tell you they don’t, they are just fibbing.
Fear. The fear of failure.
Often these little bouts of atychiphobia come when we’re under pressure. Not to worry. Allow me to provide some perspective.
Golf is a game of failure. The guy who fails the best usually wins.
When it comes to winning, it doesn’t happen that often. The great Eldrick Woods at his peak was only winning about 20% of the time.
Let’s give ourselves the best chance of overcoming the fear by doing some of the following:
- Routine, routine, routine.
- Remember that everyone else is worried about their own shots – not yours
- If you can’t play a particular shot – don’t try! Play your game
- Caffeine, alcohol and drugs make it worse…so, don’t…well, perhaps caffeine is ok or absolutely necessary
- Remember this, a wise old pro once said to me, “will you die?” “No?” “Then there really is no pressure.”
As a side note, real fear is hitting one of these…
