Golf seems to run deep with people. Golfers can tie themselves up in knots about clubs and technique and slow play. They can get their collective knickers in a twist about what handicap someone is on. Golfers are a strange breed. Yes, me included.
We can all take the game as seriously as you like. But, do you play it for a living? Does your next meal depend on it?
I suspect not.
Over the course of two decades as a pro I’ve met many wonderful people in golf. I have met some who could be described as, “taking things a bit seriously.” From a coaching standpoint, the more seriously you take the golf the more pressure you heap on yourself. Is that what you want?
I’d like to see the golfers I coach have more Rocco Mediate in their demeanor and less Tiger Woods. Unless, of course, you are Tiger. Take the game seriously and work on it diligently. But remember, it’s a game. Have the fun you pay for. When you’re on the course play like you mean it and when the shot is finished forget about it and enjoy what you’re doing. Wandering about with mates hitting golf balls is therapeutic. Unless you decide golf is serious. Then it’s just stress. Fuck that.
