Why?

Being a dad is basically being a taxi driver who pays the passengers. Of course, those of us who are dads wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m in the car a lot. Daughter has dancing and shows and school. Son has school and work and mates. Step-Daughter’s car died. The time in the car…

I’m in the car a lot. Daughter has dancing and shows and school. Son has school and work and mates. Step-Daughter’s car died.

The time in the car gives me time to listen to podcasts. Jumping in the car and listening to something of interest instead of some modern music is a bonus form of study without studying.

Not surprisingly I listen to golf podcasts. More specifically I listen to golf coaches talk about their things. I’m almost always surprised how different each pro/coach is and yet how similar they are.

One podcast that stood out recently was a Golf in the Life of interview with Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott.

Lynn and Pia have crafted their own little niche of helping players play better golf. Not play better golf swing. They focus on the playing of the game and their company is called Vision 54 (18 under on a par 72). They have developed their own systems and structures and have been mightily successful. Why is this relevant?

They found their why. Why do they do it? You as a golfer should figure out why you play golf. Do you play:

  • For score?
  • To have a bash with mates?
  • To play cool shots?

Whatever the reason is, that’s your ‘why’. I figured out that my ‘why’ is to hit the middle of the clubface. I like to hit shots that feel great. I don’t really care about the score too much. Just hitting cool shots out of the screws is where it’s at for me.

What’s your ‘why’? You’ll go a long way to improving your golf if you know why. Your golf pro will be able to understand you better too. This all equals better shots and lower scores.

Oh, by the way, your ‘why’ isn’t to be more consistent. What does that even mean? The nature of golf dictates that consistency doesn’t happen that often. If you want to be consistent (whatever sins that may cover), nail your pre-shot routine. It’s a sort of safety blanket for your swings. Anyway – find your ‘why’ and let’s get you doing that better and more consistently (tongue firmly in cheek).
