Here’s a great little drill I keep in my library – the old left, right, both drill for chipping technique.
If my guys are struggling with chipping and to a degree, pitching, I get them to free up. Ordinarily the reason for the struggles is anxiety and us trying to control the club. This drill is designed to get you to feel the club swinging freely in each hand and then replicating that with both hands. Some players get really good at it and could chip relatively comfortably with only one hand!
Here’s yours truly doing the drill this past Saturday.
You’ll notice that I’m not static or rigid when doing the drill. I don’t think we should be when chipping. In essence what I’m feeling is the club’s weight swing back and forward. I’m never forcing the club down to the ball – gravity takes care of that. My body turns with the club and assists the club to do its thing.
Having trouble with the old chippidy doo daa? Give this drill a nudge.
Oh, I don’t want to talk about the footy.
