The secret to striking your clubs with all the purity of a tour pro on speed is to control the clubface and what path the clubface takes.

Shots are missed because one or both of these factors are not controlled. Take the clubface, for example. That’s what hits the ball – the transfer of energy to the ball. If it’s pointed in a funny direction you’ll have a funny shot. The easiest way to control the clubface is when you first take your grip. The club should locked in to your hands with the left and right arm forces opposing to create stability…see Newton’s Laws.

The path of the club is slightly more complex. The club will be travelling down to the ball in the downswing. Hopefully, the path will place the bottom of the arc or low point, just ahead of the ball. We can use any number of drills to do this but I really like this one from Martin Chuck:

With the low point slightly ahead of the ball the club will automatically have an in-to-out path (simply put) and produce straighter shots…maybe even draws.

Learn to control these two factors with your coach and watch your ball striking go from meh to magnificent.
