It may seem like a relatively obvious thing to say but I think it needs to be said. Many times playing golf, we are distracted by what’s going on around us. We may have had a bad hole earlier. Our playing partner might be a dick. It may be slow. We may be thinking about swing changes or the latest driver that’s just come out.
When we play a shot in practice or on the course, we should concern ourselves with getting the little white spud to a pre-determined target. We have talked about being decisive and having realistic expectations of your game. Let’s now use the skills we have to propel the ball at the target. Note, the target may not always be the hole.
How am I going to do this? We weigh up the conditions, how the ball is lying, how far we have and obstacles and choose a club to perform the operation. One more little thing – if you are proficient already – you can afford to have a distal focus. That is a focus when you’re over the ball that is away from you ie the target. Focus on this when playing any shot, practice or for real.
