Through all the bitching and pissing contests between the some of the recently cease-fired parties, came a Canadian winner of his home Open Championship. Not since Pat Fletcher – a club pro – won in 1954, has there been a native winner.
Nick Taylor with his powerful anti-hook swing beat Tommy Fleetwood in a playoff with an eagle putt from another area code. The crowd went nutty and the Canadian pros on the side of the green rushed to congratulate him. Adam Hadwin had the unfortunate honour of being body slammed by one of the security guards. Fear not, he’s ok.
The length of time between wins for a Canadian at the Canadian Open made me think about why? To be honest, I could throw a bunch of theories around as to why it happens so rarely but it would probably sound like a rationalisation rather than informed rhetoric.
I’m glad for Canada and Nick Taylor and Canadian Golf. There’s nothing like a home winner on a big stage to inspire people to play and to get more of us into it. Se Ri Park did it for women’s golf in South Korea and they’ve dominated. Tiger inspired a whole generation. Love a happy story.
