He’s hardly an oldie but competing against 30 somethings who are bombing it 40 miles, working out, have teams of psychologists and coaches he must feel a bit like a fish out of water.

Michael Block, a club pro from California, ties for 15th at Oak Hill and steals the hearts of the crowds and TV audience. It’s not a fluke – he is a very good player having played in the event, I think, seven times. He is, however, one of us range rats – teaching punters to not slice it or get a little more distance. He’s also a poster boy for swinging your swing. With a big ole re-route and lag into the ball he hits it solidly but not massive distances. Playing with Rory you would have thought he felt a bit emasculated at times. Not so! he played his own game and played his way to $300,000. Plenty more than his $125 lessons would produce! The hole-in-one was the icing on the cake.

Michael is obviously a good player but shows us if we play our own game we can get great results. We get those great results by KNOWING our game. If we hit low hooks, aim right and play it. If we hit snipey fades – play snipey fades. If you’re old and cunning – play old and cunning.

Congratulations to Brooks K for winning another one. He’s now one of the greats you would think.
