Ego Driven or Fitted?

I’d be interested to see how many golfers played clubs that were fitted. I would imagine, not many. I’d also be interested to see how many use a ball that was fitted for them. Again, I bet that number is low.  I ask my players that come for coaching, “have you had your clubs fitted?”…

I ask my players that come for coaching, “have you had your clubs fitted?” Invariably the answer is no. Upon further investigation I find the answers given fall into one of the following:

  1. They were cheap
  2. My mates said I needed stiff/x/regular shafts
  3. My seven iron goes 180 so I need stiff/x shafts
  4. Less loft = more distance

Ego is a game killer as far as equipment goes. I realise it’s cheaper and sometimes faster to buy a set of clubs on Ebay/Rockbottom/Golfbidder but why don’t you go and have a fitting? Around NZ and OZ and indeed the world, there are so many great pros and fitting pros that for a small price will give you a full bag fitting. Not only that, but generally speaking if you buy the clubs from them, the fitting is usually free*

*Not everyone offers this

Let your evolving game decide what bats (and Little White Ball) you play. That may well be X-flex bits of reinforcing steel, it may be that you need a 50 gram lite shaft. You may need a ball with less spin than a Pro V1. You may need more loft on your driver. And in the end, if you’re scoring better and hitting cooler shots – who gives a shit what’s written on the shaft or clubhead? I know Fred Couples didn’t worry too much when he used Tom Watson’s wife’s three wood to win the 1992 Masters.
